Adventures in Writing (IEW A)

Includes Writing, Grammar, and Vocabulary

This 30-week class is built on the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW). This is the first step in becoming an excellent writer. Learning and implementing the writing skills taught in this highly effective curriculum will prepare elementary- and middle-school-aged students with writing skills that provide a foundation for effective writing within a concrete set of expectations. IEW offers a system that provides concrete evaluation and measurable achievement. Your student will develop competency, independence, and creativity within logical boundaries that will be built upon during the course. Writing concepts will be introduced one at a time, and each idea will be modeled extensively. In every composition, they will be required to use the new technique along with previously learned techniques. Thus, students learn at a pace comfortable for them, but that requires progress with each composition. Students will learn to create an outline, write from the outline, take notes, summarize narrative stories, write 3-paragraph stories, and write from pictures. This class provides a structured approach to unleashing creativity and building communication skills. IEW builds a strong foundation without overwhelming students or moving too fast. This course will help your child develop writing skills that will last a lifetime. (To view the writing book we will use, visit IEW

For grammar, students will use the story "Nose Tree" to learn to hunt for and correct passage errors as we read it cumulatively. Vocabulary words will come from both Ancient History Writing and Nose Tree lessons. A vocabulary quiz consisting of approximately 6-10 words will be given each week. (To view the grammar book we will use, visit Nose Tree)

The class will include a weekly at-home writing assignment (rough draft, editing, and final draft) consisting of 1–3 paragraphs, to be typed and printed. I will edit and grade the final draft.
