Computer Basics/ Applications

This computer class will combine beginner topics in the first semester and applications in the second semester. In the first semester, we will cover the following topics:

  • Keyboarding (using the Typsey application, this will be the entire year)

  • What is a computer?

  • Buttons and Ports on a Computer

  • Basic Parts of a Computer

  • Inside a Computer

  • Getting to Know Laptop Computers vs Desktops

  • Monitor, Mouse, and Keyboard settings

  • Cleaning Your Computer

  • Protecting Your Computer

  • Creating a safe workspace – sitting correctly, eye strain

  • Understanding Operating Systems

  • Windows Basics: Getting Started with the Desktop

  • Saving organization – files, folders, flash drives, etc.

  • Understanding Applications

  • Connecting to the Internet

  • Digital Literacy

  • What Is the Cloud?

  • Internet Safety: Your Browser's Security Features

  • Emailing

  • Understanding Spam and Phishing

  • Browser Basics

  • Editing pictures

  • Troubleshooting

  • Accessibility features – text-to-speech, assistive technology, etc

During the second semester, computer application skills are taught to prepare students for their future. Students will learn business-critical, foundational computing skills for college and careers. In today’s high-tech, digital world, students need the necessary computer skills to be competitive and stand out to employers. Using a hands-on approach, students will gain experience exploring software applications for word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and multimedia presentation. We will use Microsoft Office and Google.

Topics covered in this semester include.

  • Improve proficiency of common features in several application software programs

  • Creative and innovative production of presentations

  • Basics of spreadsheets, formulas, and graphing

  • Resume writing and formatting

Required materials:

  • Students MUST have access to a Windows PC laptop and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and Google. They must bring their computer and charger to class. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

  • Access to Schoology – Assignments and grades will be posted here.

  • Access to Google Classroom – Assignments and quizzes will also be posted here for classroom use.

Class homework requirements: 1-1.5 hours of homework each week and Typsey typing lessons (I will provide Typsey access).
