Childhood of Famous Americans

Have you ever wondered what Thomas Edison’s favorite birthday cake was? Or if Betsy Ross knew how to ice skate? While we tend to know what made some Americans famous, have you ever wondered what they were like as kids? This class will help you find out!

Childhood of Famous Americans is a 30-week, one-and-a-half-hour unit study-style literature class for older elementary students that will educate through entertaining and inspiring biographies of recognizable names.  Using quality biographies from the Childhood of Famous Americans series as our guide, we will explore beyond the well-known stories into how some famous names grew up and became so remarkable, as well as expand on the science, history, geography, art, and applied math concepts from each book that are sure to intrigue your child. Each week, 4-5 chapters will be assigned for homework. Then, using the topics that present themselves in the literature, we will incorporate cross-curricular activities during our class time.

We will read 6-8 biographies, with each book taking around 4 weeks to complete. In addition to covering your child’s reading requirement for the year, this class will supplement your child’s curriculum in science, history, geography, vocabulary, and more. All books will be provided with the supply fee. You can check out all available titles at this link: https://www.simonandschuster.com/series/Childhood-of-Famous-Americans. We will decide on many of the titles together in class before reading.

Homework Requirements: Students will be expected to read the assigned chapters weekly, complete comprehension and short writing assignments for each book, and complete unit projects as assigned. Parental help at home is welcomed and expected.
