Career Quest: Exploring the People & Professions that Shape Our Community

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to land a plane, save a life, or manage a busy restaurant? In Career Quest, your student will go beyond the textbook to meet the real people who keep our community moving. This class connects 6th–8th graders with local professionals to discover the skills, tools, and daily adventures of various career paths. I hope to spark curiosity, expand perspectives, and help students imagine how they might one day contribute to their own community.

A guest professional will share their story and lead students through a hands-on activity related to their field. From the high-stakes world of emergency services to the fast-paced environment of the service industry, students will explore a wide spectrum of possibilities. At least 12 career professionals will be featured over a 30-week period, with two weeks dedicated to each. Each semester will conclude with a service project, giving students the opportunity to give back and make a positive impact in our community. Parents will be kept informed of weekly activities via email or Schoology communications, including class highlights and photos.

The scope of what students will learn with each guest professional (over 2 weeks):

  • PROFESSIONAL INSIGHT: Understand professional roles, daily tasks, responsibilities, equipment, and technology used on the job.

  • INTERVIEW SKILLS: Gain active interview experience by leading Q&A sessions with career professionals.

  • PRACTICAL PROBLEM SOLVING: Engage in hands-on challenges based on real-life scenarios from the career fields.

  • TERMINOLOGY MASTERY: Identify, define, and accurately apply specialized vocabulary and key terminology.

  • RESOURCE EXPLORATION: Utilize helpful books and engaging videos to deepen understanding of each profession.

  • SUBJECT RELEVANCE: Discover the real-world application of math, science, and reading skills.

  • COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: Participate in a special community service project each semester.

CAREER PROFESSIONALS: I am seeking a diverse group of career professionals, including first responders (firefighters and police officers), healthcare specialists (dentists, pediatricians, and speech therapists), and experts in fields such as web design, aviation, and animal care. I am also interested in connecting with representatives from Chick-fil-A management and library services.

HOMEWORK REQUIREMENTS: Homework is NOT required; however, students may earn extra credit toward an end-of-semester reward by completing optional weekly assignments. Those assignments may include short one-page reports, research, and/or book reading.
