Adventures in Reading & Writing 3-5

Adventures in Reading and Writing- Elementary is catered to 3rd-5th grade students.  Each 1.5 hour class will  consist of a rich literature reading and discussion (using both short stories and chapter books).  We will discuss basic fundamentals of literature such as genre, characters, and figurative language and take it to the next step to understand author’s purpose, plot, and other language elements.  Next, we will practice a variety of activities to study the story further.  This may include acting out the story, craft activities, games, or using graphic organizers to further explore a theme or idea.  Finally, children will continue the literature experience by writing independently and learning the writing process. Confident and hesitant writers will be encouraged to use their words to respond to their learning and create stories of their own.  This class is a no pressure experience to explore literature and writing to encourage your child’s creativity and a love for learning.  Children will be challenged at their level, encouraged to identify their own voice, and grow in their own creativity.

In this class, we will focus on and celebrate individual thought without the pressure of emphasizing spelling and grammar.  Students will build on their own imaginations to find their voice and express themselves through their words.  Individual abilities and ideas will be celebrated and curious minds are encouraged!

Class homework requirements: Some at-home writing will be needed to complete writing activities.

*We will study at least four chapter books throughout the year.   If a child repeats the class, a different variety of books will be used.
