Read the Movies
Reading. You either love it, hate it, or do it if you must. Reading is my favorite hobby, and I love it when there is a movie to watch and compare after reading. When I can share this experience with others…even better! This is what I want to experience with your students this year.
We’ve had writing, and therefore reading, since Ancient Sumeria. Movies didn’t come along until 1895. But it only took one year for someone to make the first movie based on a book. It’s a pretty fabulous way to enjoy a book! Even though it’s a great way to “see” a book, a movie can never capture the book exactly.
In this class, we will read award-winning Newbery books and watch portions of the movies based on them. We will compare and contrast the scenes in the books and their corresponding movie versions. We will also explore literary elements and how they translate through the movie scenes.
Not everyone loves to read, but I hope this class will help reluctant readers (or flat-out reading-averse) kids to see the value and enjoyment of books! That’s the goal. Reading aloud in class will NOT be required. For kids who LOVE to read, they will enjoy seeing how the “movie” in their head as they read compares to the vision the movie brings to life.
The class will be book club style, where we discuss both the books and the movie scenes. Input from every student will be essential and valued in our group discussions. Book passages will be assigned each week, and we will watch scenes together in class. Families may enjoy reading the books together, as most make great read-alouds, but reading the assigned passages, whether independently or as a family, or listening to the audiobook, is required for class discussion. Homework will be reading the assigned passages and light work regarding the literary elements.
All materials, including books, will be provided.
