Inkling Society Book Club
Step into the imaginative worlds of two of the most influential writers of the 20th century, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, in this middle school literature class.
To begin our quest, students will read The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien to learn about the lives and friendship of these two great men. Students will then read some of their most beloved works, including The Silver Chair, Tales from the Perilous Realm, and The Hobbit. As time allows, we may also read The Horse and His Boy and/or excerpts of other works from Lewis.
Students will engage with the stories’ immersive worlds, uncover symbolic meaning, and discuss the vices and virtues of characters as they navigate quests, magical adventures, and battles of good versus evil.
Required materials: Students must have copies of The Mythmakers, The Silver Chair, Tales from the Perilous Realm, and The Hobbit. If we are able to read other works from Lewis, I will give at least two weeks' notice to allow time for purchasing/borrowing.
Homework: Students will read the assigned chapters before each class. Students will also keep a weekly vocabulary journal (provided by me). Projects and short writing exercises may be assigned or completed in class, depending on students' abilities.
