English 9/10

British Literature

Meets the requirement for one High School English credit.

This 30-week course for grades 9-12 introduces students to the fundamentals of literary analysis and persuasive essay writing.

Following The Lively Art of Writing, students will learn how to develop a clear thesis, select strong evidence, and craft logical, well-organized arguments. The course emphasizes understanding purpose, audience, and tone, as well as organizing ideas effectively and expressing them with clarity and confidence.

Students will learn the basics of literary criticism through the study and analysis of significant works of literature. Discussions on virtue and literary themes will encourage an appreciation for well-crafted prose.

Students will write a five-paragraph essay every three to four weeks, each based on a newly assigned novel. Class time will center on discussion of the readings, collaborative idea development, and practicing essay-writing techniques.
