Current Events: Critical Thinking in a Crazy World

Studying current events is an excellent way for students to learn about the world around them. Now more than ever, it is vital that our students can discern reputable media sources free of bias or misinformation. Learning to research, study, write, and discuss a wide range of topics in a logical, organized, and informed manner is a skill that will benefit your student throughout their entire life.

Current Events students will be presented with weekly topics pulled from the headlines, ranging from government, education, and environmental issues to entertainment, food, and science. We will spend time in class working in teams to research, report, discuss, and write about various current events. Guided, respectful discussion with students will help them gain perspective on the world beyond their front door, foster awareness and empathy for their neighbors, challenge them to respond to changes in the world around them, and enhance their studies in their core subjects as their knowledge grows.

This class is heavy on discussion and sharing opportunities to listen and learn together. What we don’t know, we research together. Thoughtful, respectful, and meaningful conversations are at the core of our time together. Minimal writing but heavy reading in and out of class is needed. Parental support for reading and writing is welcome if needed, and accommodations can certainly be made.

Students will need a laptop or tablet to access the Internet during class.

Sensitive topics concerning sex, gender studies, and sexuality will not be part of our studies. Students will be actively encouraged to discuss all topics we cover with their parents in the context of their beliefs and values.
